Matariki is the Maori celebration New year for all New Zealanders. Matariki is the 7 stars that you will see right above the sun. Before they were stars, they were all sisters. Tupuanuku, Tupuarangi, Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Ururangi and Matariki. Matariki is the oldest sister of them all, that's why we call it Matariki. On the other side, people say that there were 9 stars. The other 2 were Pohutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-rangi. This month, me and my class will be celebrating Matariki.
Matariki is about the people who has passed and is now a celebration about it! Matariki heralds a time of remembrance, joy and peace. It is time for communities to come together and celebrate!
You can celebrate Matariki if you would like or with your family. Anyone, even people who isn't Maori can join this celebration event. Hope you have a great holiday!
